The connecting rod group is composed of connecting rod body, connecting rod big end cap, connecting rod small end bushing, connecting rod big end bearing bush and connecting rod bolt (or screw). The connecting rod group bears the gas force transmitted from the piston pin and its own swing and the reciprocating inertial force of the piston group. The magnitude and direction of these forces change periodically. Therefore, the connecting rod is subjected to alternating loads such as compression and tension.
The connecting rod must have sufficient fatigue strength and structural rigidity. If the fatigue strength is insufficient, the connecting rod body or the connecting rod bolt will often break, which will cause a major accident of the destruction of the whole machine. If the rigidity is insufficient, the rod body will be bent and deformed and the large end of the connecting rod will be out of round deformation, resulting in eccentric wear of pistons, cylinders, bearings and crank pins.
